Hey Julie, they are pretty hard to spot at night. The Orang Asli guide
that was
with us was the only person to spot them.I did spot a Cyrtodactylus
Pubisulcus on a tree.I really felt a sense of validation from the trip.I
realized my
successes with Felinus were trial and error, but I was also very lucky.I
had more
trial than error, and got it right, more often then not.I am definately
hooked
more than Ive ever been, and Malaysia is just another year away
again.After
that, hello Borneo.Even though Ive had alot of success with the Felinus
in
captivity,I feel 3-5 more trips are needed to really understand all
their
behaviours. They shut their eyes immediately when light is shone,is it
just the
brightness, are they responding to humans,or is there another predator
out there?They
will sit motionless for several minutes after that. Not the best
defense,but it
makes you wonder.Still alot to learn.

I think they(felinus) really are unique,in that most other wildlife
stares at
lights shone in their eyes. All the spiders and frogs we saw did just
that.I
had the pleasure of catching a glimpse of a slow laurus(sp?) along a
roadside, and it just stared at the headlights. Most of the other geckos
did the same.I
know they dont have eyelids like felinus, but they could turn their heads
if
needed. It was little things like that which has me even more interested
than
before.

I can't believe May is already here! You guys have less than three
weeks to book your rooms for the symposium. I know that there will be a
lot of last minute attendees, so you guys should prepare early. I've
placed ads in most of the local rags (Austin) and around the internet.
I'm heading up to Austin in a couple of weeks to do a radio interview
about the symposium. I'm excited about that. I know that some of you
are trying to decide which symposium to attend. Allen and I talked
about this, and we want to let all of you know that both symposiums
offer unique lectures. His symposium is New Caledonian specific. My
symposium covers a much broader range of species and locales and is
geared more toward field discoveries. Both symposiums should be great!
We have plenty of fun things planned at the Austin symposium. I hope to
see all of you there!!!
Marcus, I can't wait for your lecture!

Diane,
I am sure Leann will step in, I have been gone for the past three days
and am just getting caught up on e-mail! Even if you do not have an
non-domestic vet locally some will do phone consults for a fee.
http://www.arav.com/USMembers.htm is a great place to find non-domestic
vets. These are very seriously interested vets (and some laypeople with
lots of reptile and amphibian experience) who pay a good chunk of change
yearly to be members. They also get an excellent journal (forget the
name right now) as members so they are educated by each other on cutting
edge medical news. Try there first!
Additionally, any vet can test for parasites. They will either do it
with your gecko's fecal sample on site or send it out to a lab. Just
contact the local vet to find out how they would like you to do it. Be
sure to ask for the crypto test, that is not normally included. Once
you have an id on a parasite a phone consult will be a lot more useful.
Best of luck, and I am glad Sadie is doing well. If Sadie was exposed to
this gecko she will need treatment also.

Hi Julie!
Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can do about getting her tested.
Luckily, Na'Toth and Sadie have been living in separate enclosures
except
for a brief period after Sadie's initial quarantine. Na'Toth turned out
to
be a bully and wouldn't let Sadie eat, so we got her her own "house".
:-)

Good deal. Then you can develop a treatment plan. Right now you don't
know what is going on. Could be something as treatable as a big pinworm
infestation or as bad as crypto. Fecal testing will reveal the answer!
Regurging food is a sign of crypto, however, it is also a sign of a
major stressor for many problems in geckos.

We will also have a Texas-sized Texas Hold 'em game on Friday night
after the ice breaker if anyone is interested. I think you guys will
really like Austin. For those interested, we are heading out to Val
Verde County on the Sunday after the symposium to herp for a few days.
I still need dry good donations for the charity banquet. See you guys
at the gathering! Lyle, I'll have my video camera throughout the
weekend :-)
