I believe the 'situation' is referring to the plight of Madagascar's
forest, where Uroplatus live.

The forests are being depleted at unsustainable rates for: slash and burn
agriculture; lumber; and firewood. Since 1990, Madagascar has lost 854,000
hectares of forest - which is almost the size of Puerto Rico!
